The
Epworth Sleepiness Scale
Snoring may be
a symptom of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome, or OSAS, where breathing
periodically stops for a few seconds. The sufferer may wake to find themselves
gasping for breath, or remedy the situation semiconsciously.
The Epworth Sleepiness Scale was developed in Australia as a tool to help
diagnose OSAS. Please note: the ESS should only be considered a subjective
tool in evaluating your snoring. If you score 11 or more, there is a good
chance you may have OSAS and you should seek the advice of your doctor.
However, the ESS cannot diagnose your condition and scoring less than 11
CANNOT guarantee that you don't have OSAS.
To
assess the possibility that you have OSAS, take the simple test that follows.
How likely are you to
doze off or fall asleep in the following situations, in contrast to feeling
just tired? This refers to your usual way of life in recent weeks or months.
Even if you have not done some of these things, try to work out how they
would have affected you. Use the following scale to choose the most appropriate
number for each situation:
0 = would never doze
1 = slight chance of dozing
2 = moderate chance of dozing
3 = high chance of dozing
Answer
each question 0, 1, 2 or 3 by selecting the appropriate score for each
question asked.
