What Is Mild Sleep Apnoea?

When you are sleeping at night your bodies muscles become relaxed. This is essential for a good night’s sleep. If the muscles in your throat relax this could lead to a narrowing of your airway. This may cause snoring, when the airways narrow and eventually collapse this causes apnoea which stands for “without breath”, this causes you to stop breathing briefly. Your body will sense this narrowing or the throat and you will wake up briefly, take a few deep breaths and then go back to sleep before suffocation.

Don’t be impatient – you will adjust!

Just as athletes must adjust to wearing mouth guards, you will have to adjust to wearing your TheraSnore appliance. But – trust us – within a week or two, you’ll be glad you did!

Here’s what to expe…

At first, you may wake up and discover that you have removed the TheraSnore while you were asleep. It may be on the floor, or buried in the bedding. This is normal.

Also, you may find yourself generating excess saliva during the first few nights. Don’t be concerned; this is only temporary.

When you first start using the TheraSnore, you may wish to insert it 15-30 minutes before you go to bed. This allows you to adjust to the “feel” of the appliance before actually lying down to sleep.

Finally, if any soreness develops, contact the dentist who fitted your TheraSnore to arrange an adjustment. Most adjustments only take a few minutes.

In a few days, you won’t even know you’re wearing the TheraSnore appliance.

How to use your TheraSnore

Follow a regular oral hygiene program of brushing and flossing.

Apply the appliance to your upper teeth. Your lower jaw will find its proper position naturally. The appliance should fit securely over your upper teeth, while your lower jaw should have freedom to open and close.

Relax your jaw and don’t think about the appliance. It will work passively.

Clean your appliance by soaking in OrthoFresh® cleaner.

If you have any questions, contact your dentist. Your dentist is an expert and will be happy to assist you and answer any questions that you may have.

There are over 80 mandibular advancement devices on the market however, only a handful have been clinically proven to be effective for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea or apnoea as it is spelt here in the UK.

The mandibular advancement device is usually the preferred first line treatment for snoring and sleep apnoea in many UK hospitals and sleep disorder clinics and nowadays with costs been cut within hospitals many leading doctors recommend snorers to use self fit mandibular advancement devices for the relief of snoring as they work almost instantly.

How does a mandibular advancement devices work?

Mandibular advancement is a simple technique for opening the airway, keeping the soft palate taught and helping your breath more easily and quietly during sleep – thereby preventing snoring and relieving mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea.

Mandibular advancers work by simply advancing the lower jaw known as the mandible forward. By keeping the jaw slightly forward in a comfortable position, the soft palate is also kept taught and prevented from vibrating. It is this vibrating of the soft palate that causes the noise we all know as snoring.

By keeping the airway free and open during sleep, we are able to get oxygen into the body and have a more restful and peaceful nights sleep.

Many sufferers of sleep apnoea also suffer very badly with daytime sleepiness, in fact sleep apnoea is one of the main causes of road accidents when drivers fall asleep at the wheel.

Which mandibular advancement device or splint is best?

Comfort and effectiveness are the main factors when choosing a mandibular advancement device or splint. TheraSnore is only mandibular advancement device that is clinically proven, has 5 adjustable settings and simply self fits to the upper teeth.

The advantage of only fitting to the upper teeth is that the lower jaw is free to move from side to side and therefore it is not locked in one position.

Many of the simple mouth guards sold on the internet are unfortunately just mouth guards, they are not adjustable, nor comfortable and have not gone through extensive clinical trials to prove their effectiveness in the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnoea.

TheraSnore has been the number one choice of healthcare professionals for over 30 years and is the worlds number one appliance on volume of sales alone. Just 2 years ago the latest self fit model of TheraSnore was introduced so that snorers and mild to moderate sleep apnoea sufferers could use a clinically proven, adjustable and comfortable treatment for snoring at a fraction of the cost that previous TheraSnore professional fitted devices and splints had been charged at.

Here in the UK, TheraSnore has been on contract with the NHS and supplied to many sleep clinics for over 10 years and TheraSnore is still considered the best mandibular advancement device for snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnoea.

Do not ignore the warning signs!

If you or your partner snores it is important that you read the information contained on this page very carefully.

Snoring can have a serious effect on the health of the sufferer and can also be a sign of the potential life threatening condition Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

Make sense of Snoring

Snoring is often regarded as little more than a joke or nuisance, however Snoring affects millions of people in the UK and research has shown just how devastating Snoring can be, not only to the health of the snorer, but on the lives of the people around them.

Snoring occurs when the air does not flow smoothly through the nose and throat passages, the soft tissue at the back of the throat vibrates causing a sound that we all know as Snoring.

This vibration increases when the body breathes faster to compensate for the slight blockage in the airway that the soft tissue causes.

Is Snoring killing you?

Snoring can be a serious risk to your health and simple snoring alone can increase the risk of a stroke. Cardiovascular disease is also becoming increasingly linked with Snoring.

People who snore severely can also have problems with breathing during sleep and often wake gasping for breath after short periods of not breathing at all.

This happens when the airway at the back of the throat becomes blocked and a sharp intake of breath happens as the body fights for more oxygen.

Snoring can be a sign of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

The condition known as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea or OSA is thought to affect 1 in 15 snorers. Many snorers are unaware that they have this condition, but are increasingly aware of the effects. Loud habitual Snoring, excess daytime sleepiness, your partner telling you that you stop breathing during the night, waking up feeling that you did not really sleep at all, poor concentration, irritability and or depression, these are all effects of OSA, which left untreated can be potentially fatal.

TheraSnore Can Help

TheraSnore is clinically proven to help you stop snoring, it works by preventing the lower teeth and jaw from falling backwards during sleep.
